Elderberry has SO many amazing benefits! With the cold and flu season coming up, I make this every year! I would say the total cost to make this is around $40.
I always make it myself to be sure I have a LARGE batch! This lasts my family all year and we have enough to share with family and friends! You can purchase dried elderberry online and local honey at your favorite farmers market, local co op, or local health food stores! I always choose local honey for the benefits!
Elderberry Syrup- Large Batch
1 lb dried elderberries
9 cups water
6 cups honey (local + raw is best)
Directions:
1) Place dried berries plus water in a large pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer on medium heat for a half hour.
2) Mash berries in pot to allow the water to soak the berry juice.
3) Using a fine mesh strainer, strain to separate the water from the berries.
4) Allow the mixture to cool for 45 min. (Do not add honey before letting cool!)
5) Stir in honey, and mix up well!
6) Jar. Keeps in the fridge for 6 months!
For preventative use I give/take daily. 1-2 tablespoons for an adult and 1 tablespoon for a child.
If you are ill, or feel like you may be coming down with something- take and or give a few tablespoons to heal and or prevent!
*Remember not to give your baby under 1 ANY honey!*
You can make a baby safe recipe by just keeping out the honey all together! (Same recipe, just no honey at all!)
